The dreams of poor immigrant is not like this of rich American however, even this simple, decent, and justified dream is not permitted for this woman. She spends her life working very hard to collect money for the treatment of her boy but finds herself accused of murder of first degree. Her crime was to dream where she should not do! she was really dancing in the dark time that we live. Amazing this concern about immigrants that Lars Von Trier has, in breaking the waves a stranger comes to the calm village and marry a girl there, in dancer in the dark and Dogvile an immigrant abused ruthlessly... I know exactly how does it feel! 

 intelligent, calm, realistic and dramatic presentation of life. Romy schneider was so good in this role that I cannot imagine any one may try to play it again!

Lars von Trier tackles the problem of immigrants again. After his wonderful film "Dancer in the dark", he gets som inspiration from the "return of the old lady" to revenge and make a huge ending scenes where fire swallow the whole village.
