Saddam College of Medicine and its teaching hospital

Saddam College of Medicine was founded in 1987 in the aim of providing Iraq with scientists in Medicine and Medical sciences. Iraq in 1987 was in ever increasing demand for scientists in different fields of knowledge, more than 40 million Iraqi Dinars (about 120 million USA Dollar) were spent for building this school of Medicine let alone money spent in providing it with necessary staff, books and services. The AlKadhimia hospital, which was built in 1982 by a famous Japanese constructions company and entered the service in 1983, was annexed to Saddam College of Medicine after adding new buildings to it and many highly developed operational theaters. The hospital name was changed to "Saddam College of Medicine teaching Hospital" and then to "The University Hospital" after the foundation of Saddam University in 1992.

Now it is a 630 bedded hospital. It includes almost all the specialties with 33 consolatory clinics, well-equipped intensive care unit and full investigation facilities. It is recognized teachings center and on the same time a major hospital in Baghdad, Iraq.

In 1989 and to assess the level of the newly born school, a comparative examination took place. The Edinburgh University, school of Medicine, Baghdad University school of Medicine and Al Mustansiria University school of Medicine participated. There are 10 colleges of Medicine in Iraq to have an idea click her.

Saddam college of Medicine won the second place after Edinburgh University school of Medicine, this was a promising sign for this college that followed a new pedagogic style and few months later, the Ministry of higher education started to contact the internationally well known Universities to arrange for sending Iraqi scientist for different training periods their.

In 1990 primary arrangements were set to send the second year student to England for Medical English courses and the fourth year Medical students to Belgium for a clinical training in one of the Hospitals there.

Many well known teachers were lecturing in this school of Medicine one of the names was D.B.Moffat from Cardiff University in Wales in addition to the best teachers in Iraqi Universities. The teachers enjoyed the privilege of participating in international conferences and educational courses for free as the Iraq afforded all expenses.

However, Iraq enemies (regardless who they are) conspired and the country was in a destructive war in 1991, the plans were stopped then abandoned and the dreams were blown with wind that stormed Iraq in 1991.

Saddam College of Medicine continued to survive although the resources under the embargo were much less than in 1987 when it was founded.

After continuous efforts Saddam College of Medicine was added to the WHO recognized medical schools and was the place of many international conferences since then. It is still now one of the best Iraqi schools not in Medicine only but in all fields of scientific knowledge as well due to the genuine and devoted attitude of the teachers and the students who despite embargo continue to seek knowledge and update what they already have...when we say embargo we mean the unfair sanctions that prevent even the papers and pencils from reaching the Iraqis to have an idea about the embargo and the Iraqis challenging it see her. Some of the Saddam College of Medicine students are working in best hospitals of the world here is an example. And some of the ongoing researches here is an example.
